Obtaining of oat doubled haploid lines by wide crossing method, and the identification of partial hybrids

The National Centre for Research and Development granted funding for Applied Research Programme entitled: „Obtaining of oat doubled haploid lines by wide crossing method, and the identification of partial hybrids” submitted by the consortium established by The F. Górski Institute of Plant Physiology Polish Academy of Science, Strzelce Plant Breeding Ltd. and Agricultural University in Kraków.

Doubled haploids (DH) of oat will be obtained by wide crossing method using pollination by maize pollen. Obtained homozygous oat DH lines will be joined to the breeding programme in Strzelce Plant Breeding Ltd., what led to the production of new cultivars few years faster. In oat, in contrast to other cereals, maize chromosomes not always are eliminated during haploid embryo development. Identification of oat x maize hybrids will be done using hybridization in situ, which allows to identify translocations between oat and maize genomes. In obtained DH lines, yield components and quality of grains will be evaluated. IPP PAS in Kraków is only one scientific institute in Poland where oat DH lines are produced by wide crossing method. The project coordinator is dr hab. Edyta Skrzypek, Department of Biotechnology IPP PAS. Colaborators: dr hab. Izabela Marcińska (Department of Biotechnology), dr Ilona Czyczyło-Mysza (Department of Biotechnology), dr Kinga Dziurka (Department of Biotechnology), dr Marzena Warchoł (Department of Biotechnology)Project time frame: 2015-2018.
